The design process for this seasonal weekend house served as an experimental laboratory for modern, sustainable, and weather resistant materials. Vertically configured, the Zinc House contains three master suites with stunning, often vertiginous, views of the ocean. Window penetrations visually eliminate the foreground and provide unobstructed views of the horizon, creating the sensation of literally being on the ocean. Highly corrosive salt air and frequently harsh weather conditions associated with the location normally accelerate the erosion of more commonly-used materials, specifically those with any ferrous content. Zinc, a sustainable building material, was selected to provide a maintenance-free, long-lasting envelope. Readily found in nature, zinc does not weather, will not change color, and when scratched heals itself to its factory patina. The zinc was installed as a rain screen to eliminate the capillary action and movement of water typically associated with pressure differentials and high wind conditions. Each fastener on the entire envelope is surgical grade stainless steel; cedar siding accents serve as a physical marker of the passing time and to reflect the severe effects of weather.
