This project, a proposal for affordable housing anchored by a signature community facility - the Boys Club of New York - was a joint venture between Alembic Community Development and two other architecture firms (Urban Quotient and Peter Woll), for which Bernheimer Architecture was design lead. BA developed a site plan linking four disparate building sites divided by an elevated subway train along Livonia Avenue in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn comprised of three buildings containing 207 units of affordable housing and new 67,000 SF branch for the Boys Club, as well as streetscape, lighting, and safety improvements.  The residential buildings, each designed by a different architect, were linked by a material palette of shifting brick tones and colorful window panels, and set of window types determined by BA to create a varied yet visually identifiable family of buildings.  The Boys Club facility, designed by Bernheimer Architecture, is wrapped in a perforated metal screen backpainted with a colorful mural to create a glowing beacon for the neighborhood that is open, welcoming, and available to all residents, new and old.
