The project is a renovation of an existing three storey residence in Ocean Bay Park, NY, a Fire Island beach community. The goal of the renovation was to maintain the existing interior volume of the house (only 1600sf in total) and to dramatically increase the amount of outdoor living space. The architecture endeavors to blur the distinction between inside and outside through the use of cantilevering volumes and planes. These shapes simultaneously help shelter the occupants from the sun, draw the eye to the outside by framing views of the surrounding context and ocean, and most importantly encourage the owner to get outside!
The program of the residence was inverted exchanging what was the master suite on the top floor with the current living room. This transposition of program liberated the living space and allowed us to visually connect the ocean to the bay. Only 16’ in width the house endeavors to maintain the original spirit of escaping to the beach by proposing a house that is modest in scale but rich in experience.
