This small sun shelter, a folly for a Dallas public park, draws formal inspiration from the beehive. Working with the Dallas Parks & Recreation department, the pavilion takes an existing park typology, the open-aired sheltered eating area, and creates a modest structure with a unique and smartly designed roof that diffuses the sunlight. The honeycomb filter, suggestive of a beehive, of the roof allows direct views of the sky straight overhead while casting oblique shadows and providing shade. Fabricated in interlocking, custom-broken aluminum sheets the honeycomb roof is painted bright yellow, covered in glass and set within a rectilinear steel structure. Beyond sheltering from the sun and elements, the pavilion provides space for grilling along with a large communal picnic table.
