As part of the New Foundations Program for the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and acting as both developer and architect, Della Valle Bernheimer coordinated the design and construction of 10 semi-detached, two-family homes in the East New York section of Brooklyn. Designed to encourage developers to create affordable housing, the 2,200sf homes were privately developed on land owned by the HPD as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s $7.5 billion affordable housing plan to create 165,000 units of affordable housing over 10 years. Della Valle Bernheimer invited three esteemed colleagues to collaborate on the designs, Architecture Research Office, BriggsKnowles Architecture + Design, and Lewis-Tsurumaki-Lewis. Two housing types were developed with each firm selecting one floor plan type and designing a shell for that building type, each with a unique exterior appearance. A material palette was developed upon which all the architects drew to compose their facades. The materials included 90% recycled corrugated aluminum, fiber cement panels, and cedar siding. Each home is comprised of an owner-occupied duplex unit located above a single rental unit on the ground floor. This project won a special citation for innovative design from the AIA NY Chapter in 2007
