This project is the second in a series of continuing collaborations with the author and scholar Kate Bernheimer. Published at Places Design Observer and completed with architectural collaborator Vera Leung, this series of drawings and models imagines the spaces of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale about a boy who journeys out into the world in order to understand the meaning of fear. In our interpretation we have re-sited the story in the 1940s, at the site of an Allied bombing run at the Edersee Dam in Germany. The investigations focus on the space and forces experienced by a soldier stationed at this dam at the time of the bombing, and translate these experiences into pure shapes and form. Beginning as a series of site-specific documents, the work metamorphoses into a series of printed 3D ceramic models articulating our imaginings of the space of the story.
